Overview
We had the pleasure of working with Abracadabra Hair Dressing, a vibrant, retro 80s-style hair dresser nestled in the heart of Adelaide’s Hutt Street community. Known for its neon lights, bright colors, and personalized service, Abracadabra stands out not only for its exceptional haircuts but also for its unique atmosphere. The salon offers complimentary beverages like coffee, tea, wine, and beer, making every visit special. However, with mirrored walls and a colorful interior often mistaken for a dance studio, they needed a way to showcase their true identity while attracting local talent and new clients.

Our mission was to create a professional yet retro-inspired video that highlighted the salon’s personality, stylish interior, and welcoming vibe. The final video captures the heart of Abracadabra and sets the stage for their online presence on social media and their website.

This project showcases our ability to combine creativity with technical problem-solving to deliver a product that aligns with our client’s vision and goals. From addressing the challenges of a complex filming environment to creating a visually stunning and engaging video, we ensured Abracadabra’s unique charm shines through.

Approach
To bring this project to life, we started by understanding Abracadabra’s goals: showcase their interior, dispel misconceptions about the space, and create an engaging tool to attract both clients and stylists. With creative freedom from the client, we designed a plan that reflected the salon’s retro aesthetic while maintaining a professional and cinematic look.

Preparation and Filming
Before filming, we assessed the location, identifying potential challenges such as the tight space and mirrored walls that could reflect the equipment or people filming. Our solution was to use a micro drone, which allowed us to capture stable, high-quality 4K footage without visible reflections. Using dynamic panning shots and dramatic bird’s-eye views, we emphasized key features of the salon, such as its bold lighting, retro front desk, stylish chairs, wash basins, and iconic red couch centerpiece.

Challenges and Solutions
Filming in a confined space with multiple mirrors and bright lights presented a unique opportunity to push our creativity and technical skills. While the reflective surfaces and lighting occasionally interfered with the drone’s signal, these elements also allowed us to experiment with different approaches to achieve stunning results.

Editing and Delivery
The video went through a comprehensive post-production workflow, including cutting, editing, adding visual effects, color grading, and sound design. The result was a polished, cinematic video featuring retro-inspired music that perfectly matched Abracadabra’s personality.
